IDEAS FOR CAMDEN

REDUCE WASTE. SAVE THE PLANET!

alt.economy

What is it?
Using behavioural nudges for increased community participation in waste reduction practices.

Why is it useful?
It's obvious that the way we manage and produce waste in our cities isn’t very good - we see discarded furniture, food waste and plastic packaging, littering Camden’s streets daily – but incentivising collective action towards waste reduction is difficult.

The Behavioural Insights Team have shown how small behavioural nudges and social competition can be used to promote more socially positive behaviour. These ideas could be implemented at the community level to help increase collective action towards reducing waste across Camden.

Who would need to be involved?
  • Camden residents
  • Camden Citizens’ Assembly
  • Camden Council
  • Waste & recycling services
  • Behavioural scientists

Where do we start?
  • Research waste streams in Camden to identify where the most significant collective impact could be had.
  • Work with behavioural science experts to identify how “nudging” could be applied without it feeling coercive.
  • Run workshop with stakeholder representatives to identify and co-design potential interventions.
  • Develop testable nudges and social competition experiments.
  • Trial small scale experiments across Camden to identify which ideas work best in reality and refine proposals.

Some thoughts…
  • How do we ensure that “socially positive behaviour” is democratically agreed upon?
  • Who should be responsible for implementing these programs?
